As 2022 winds down this week, I wanted to take a look ahead to 2023 and review some SEO thoughts & tips for the New Year.
With renewed (and peaked) interest in SEO over the past few years, the number of updates and changes to the search landscape has also increased, making it even more of a challenge for small business owners to keep improving their search positioning.
While there are plenty of resources online about improving your small business SEO efforts (including directly from the search engines themselves, here are a few of my tips for 2023 (and beyond).
One of the most important updates of the year in search came from Google’s Helpful Content update, which aims to reward website content that is most helpful to their website visitors.
So, what does “most helpful” actually mean?
When someone searches for something online — whether for something they intend to purchase, a service or company they intend to hire, or simply looking for more information related to a topic — they have question they want answered or, in other words, a problem they need help with or need solved.
Helpful content, then, would be content most likely to help solve their problems or questions.
A good starting point, then, would be to ask yourself: what are the problems my small business help solve for my customers?
While there are many external aspects ( factors outside of your website, your business listings & social media accounts ) that can affect your site’s SEO, the majority of your focus should be placed on factors within your control:
Many of the aspects that can improve your off-page SEO (factors that are outside your control) won’t be effective unless you improve some of the factors above, so keeping your SEO efforts allocated to controllable resources will most likely give you better long-term results in SEO.
