In my previous posts about small business SEO, I offered some tips on getting started with your optimization as well as a quick breakdown of a search engine results page.
In this post I want to (re)emphasize the importance behind why local SEO is a vital part of your small business digital marketing efforts.
For those that aren’t familiar with SEO it’s essentially the process of improving your company’s website so that it has the best chance of ranking at the top of a search results page, when people search for things related to your small business.
These searches online could be general ideas related to your business’ products or services, direct searches for products or services or brand-direct searches, which are just exact searches for your business’ name.
As you can imagine, optimizing your site can be vital for most local small businesses: here are a few key reasons why.
Every time someone searches for something online, it’s a moment that matters for your small business.
More people are wishing to conduct their own research when learning about products, services and companies. Being highly visible on search result pages for related terms, then, is a prime chance to establish your authority & expertise in your local area.
Perhaps the most valuable opportunities are for terms that are closer to the end of the buying journey ( the “I want to buy/hire something/someone right now” terms ).
As you can imagine, these are highly competitive search terms, as someone searching for these terms are close or very close to making a purchase.
Traffic coming from those keywords have a greater chance of converting into actual revenue so getting into a top position for those terms are extremely valuable for any small business.
It kind of goes without saying, but if you’re not in the top spot, a search engine is going to display another company’s web page.
Depending on how many competitors you have in your local area (that are also doing SEO), that top spot is going to be highly coveted & will need constant monitoring to ensure you stay in that position over time.
A drop from organic position 1 to organic position 2 can result in a drop of roughly 21% of clicks, so staying in that top spot can be just as important as getting there.
Over the years, I’ve witnessed first hand the results and success of consistent SEO efforts for my clients, so after reading this post I hope you are able to understand how valuable it could be for your local business.
